In the south, Spring baseball season starts early. We’re out at the fields in February and we’ll be there through May. So while the weather might start off chilly, it doesn’t take long before we’re sweating under the hot Texas sun while we cheer for our boys. Sometimes it’s hard to get myself motivated to go out and deal with the weather. There are a few things I’ve found to be absolute sports mom must-haves when it comes to our life at the baseball field.
If you have these three things, you’ve got the basics for a good day at the park. No matter what the weather is like, you won’t feel like it’s a chore to go watch your favorite player play!

3 SPORTS MOM MUST-HAVES
We’ve just started Weston’s eighth season playing Little League. It’s his last season playing machine pitch before he moves up to the world of kid pitch. It’s been amazing to watch him grow and develop as a player.
I can still remember rolling up to his very first game as a K-Ball player. If you don’t know what K-Ball is, it’s basically a simplified version of T-Ball. The kids start playing when they’re 3-4 years old and it’s really just adorable.
I can still remember rolling up to our first game with his gear and not much else. I think I had some snacks for Carrigan, but not much else. We sat down on the bleachers and after an hour, I was thankful the games were short. It took me a few weeks to buy my first piece of must-have sports mom gear.
It was a bleacher seat to make it more comfortable. It was a game changer and made me so much happier to head out to the games!
Experience has taught me just how important a few basic items are when it comes to how I feel about spending hours balancing mom duties and cheerleader duties.
FOLDING CHAIRS & BLANKETS
I’ve come along way since my first bleacher seat and I’ve learned how important a good folding chair is! It’s one of the first things I suggest to new sports moms. Whether we’re at practice or at a game, I spend a lot of time sitting in ours.
I’ve upgraded to one that is extremely easy to fold, is a bit oversized to be more comfortable, and it rocks! It’s so comfortable and I get comments on it all the time! It did cost a bit more than the basic chairs but it’s been so worth it and I think I’m on my fourth season using it. It’s holding up well and I’m pretty sure I’ll be enjoying it for years to come.
The other seating basic I always have with us these days is a blanket. I actually have a few that I keep in the car. They’re great for Carrigan and the other baseball siblings to spread out on. If the weather takes a dip from warm to cold it’s great to have them on hand too! There’s no need to let cold weather stop you. (Oh and we’ve been known to use blankets to shield the dugout from sun on extremely hot days here too!)
A good chair and blankets are definitely at the top of my list of sports mom must-haves.
FOLDING WAGON
I have to admit that I was a little late to the game on the folding wagon game. But it’s something that is definitely a must-have for any mom with kids in sports. I didn’t think we needed a wagon because Weston carries all of his gear in his baseball backpack.
But then I found myself carrying my folding chair, my purse, a bag with snacks and things to keep Carrigan busy, and blankets. It seemed like a lot but I was handling it.
Then Carrigan decided she wanted to play baseball too. Justin started assistant coaching and suddenly all the gear multiplied.
A folding wagon was not a question. It was something we needed. I can see now how it would have been great to have from the very beginning. Whether you have one kid or more than one playing sports, getting a folding wagon will make getting from the car to the field so much easier. It’s so worth it!
It definitely makes it easier to get psyched up to go to the game! I used to dread lugging everything in.
UNDER THE WEATHER POP-UP POD
I thought I’d figured out all of the basic pieces of equipment that made my life as a baseball mom easier. After four years, I felt like I had it down to an art.
But there are two things that I hadn’t fully figured out yet — those hot sunny days and the bees. Oh, the bees. When your baseball park has trashcans without lids, you become closely acquainted with the bees.
For the past few years, once the weather warms up during the Spring baseball season, I find myself dealing with the hot Texas sun. Sunscreen is always with me and I had taken to trying to find a good umbrella to hook on our folding chairs. But I’ve been looking for the past few years with no real luck.
This season will be different!
My newest addition to the stuff I pull into the park in my wagon is our Under the Weather® MeshPod™ and I’m left wondering why I didn’t discover it earlier! Under the Weather® Personal Pop-up Pods are the answer to being at games when the weather is less than ideal. I won’t be hesitating when the temperatures start to climb this season!
Under the Weather® offers a variety of personal pop-up pods, but here in South Texas, the MeshPod™ made perfect sense!
The Mesh Screen Pods make it easy to get the best of the warm days because the mesh lets the breeze into the pod while keeping bugs out!
It’s easy to watch the game through the see-through mesh panels and the zippered panels make it easy to get in and out of the pod. It’s super lightweight and folds up easily so I can just put it in our wagon and roll out to the game!
The Under the Weather® MeshPod™ fits any folding chair, so you can combine two of my must-haves to ensure you can focus completely on the game and not worry about anything else!
My favorite features include:
- Extremely lightweight and easy to transport
- Seamless, waterproof floor
- Water resistant
- Connectable to additional pods
- Offers UPF sun protection
- Has full zip doors on three sides
My favorite thing is that it truly is easy to pop up and fold down. I was able to do it the very first time I tried. When the game is over and the kids are ready to leave, I need to be able to clean up and go quickly. Under the Weather® makes it easy to do and I’m thankful for that!
Click here to learn more and check out the entire line of pods available! You won’t regret it!
