One of the fun things about cooking in the air fryer is that we can add fun twists to basic recipes. One of my favorite things to do is make  Air Fryer Tortilla Chips. They’re easy to make and the kids can help! They’re also fun to make into different shapes for holidays and special occasions!

Chips and dips are a must when it comes to having people over or when you’re looking for an easy snack for the family. Making your own air fryer tortilla chips is an easy solution! I’ve included a super easy cheese dip recipe we like to make when we make our own chips!

Scroll down for the complete recipe in a printable recipe card. Or read on for tips and details on making tortilla chips in air fryer!

    AIR FRYER TORTILLA CHIPS

Air fryer appetizers are where it’s at. The recipes are usually really easy to make and they’re delicious too! Air Fryer Brussel Sprouts wrapped in bacon are a perfect example! Air Fryer chips are another example of a simple recipe that works great for appetizers.

It doesn’t matter if you’re just whipping up a batch for your family or having people over, there’s nothing like fresh-made tortilla chips!

    TORTILLA CHIPS IN AIR FRYER

There are a lot of things I love about this recipe. One is that it’s quick and easy to make. I also like that there are fun ways to get the kids involved using cookie cutters to make different shaped tortilla chips.

Another perk of this air fryer recipe is that you can use your favorite tortillas to make these chips. You can use flour or corn tortillas depending on the type of chip you want to make. You can also use low carb tortillas. I really want to try using a spinach wrap or another type of wrap to make them, but I haven’t done it yet.

This is also a bit of a healthier take on chips because you don’t need tons of oil to fry them. You only need some cooking spray or some oil in a spritzer can.

HOW TO MAKE TORTILLA CHIPS IN AIR FRYER

To make air fryer tortilla chips, you need a few simple ingredients, including:

    • Flour or corn tortillas
    • Olive oil cooking spray or olive oil in a spritzer can (you can use your favorite cooking spray)
    • Salt, if desired

To make the easy garlic cheese dip I’ve included in the photos of this recipe, you need:

    • Shredded cheddar cheese
    • Milk
    • Butter
    • Garlic powder

Exact measurements are listed in the recipe care at the bottom of this post.

Tortillas cut with bat cookie cutter

You can make these chips in any type of air fryer. I use my air fryer with a basket most often, but when I want to make a lot of chips, I will use my air fryer that has a tray. It’s a combo air fryer and toaster oven. But you can make these in an air fryer basket too.

If you need to preheat your air fryer, heat it to 350°F while you prep the tortillas.

If you want to make triangle-shaped air fryer tortilla chips, use a knife or pizza cutter to slice each round tortilla into triangles. I usually cut them into 6-8 triangles each.

    Tortillas on air fryer basket

If you want to make fun shaped tortilla chips, use a cookie cutter to make them into different shapes. For Halloween, we used a bat cookie cutter. You could make these chips for any holiday. Christmas cookie cutters are fun and we also have a football-shaped cookie cutter!

You can also just use different shapes to make a fun snack!

Place the tortilla pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket and spray with the cooking spray.

    Sprinkle with salt, if desired.

    Air fried chips in basket

Cook for 3-4 minutes then flip the chips using tongs. Cook for an additional 3-4 minutes.

Cooking time will depend on your specific air fryer. As you cook your first batch of chips, watch how quickly they brown up and adjust your cooking time as needed.

Continue cooking the chips in batches until you’ve prepared all of the tortilla pieces.

Enjoy with your favorite dip! Or make air fryer nachos for a fun meal idea!

Dipping tortilla chips in cheese sauce

If you want to make the cheddar cheese dip in these photos, it super simple to make!

In a medium pan, heat the shredded cheese, milk, and butter over low heat. Whisk it often until the cheese is completely melted.

Stir in the garlic powder and serve immediately.

It’s really that easy to make!

You can swap out the garlic powder with your favorite seasoning to give the cheese dip a different flavor too!

This is awesome. Do the chips fly around in the basket when air frying? I have put a whole tortilla in and it flies to the top and sticks.
