As part of my coverage of the Mary Poppins Returns Movie premiere in Los Angeles, I had the opportunity to be part of an amazing Emily Blunt Mary Poppins Interview with my fellow bloggers. If you ever get the chance to be in the same room as her, TAKE IT! She has such amazing energy!
Disney provided me with an all-expense paid trip in exchange for sharing my experiences with my readers!

EMILY BLUNT MARY POPPINS INTERVIEW
In case you didn’t know, Mary Poppins is back! Emily Blunt is bringing the beloved character back to the big screen in Mary Poppins Returns and it’s truly magical.
It was also pretty magical to sit down and chat with her about her character and her experience bringing Mary Poppins to life in the new film.
I’ve got five of my favorite things we talked about in our interview. If you want to know about her favorite song, favorite costume, challenges, and more — read on!

HER OMG I’M MARY POPPINS MOMENT
Emily Blunt mentioned that she let herself have one OMG I’m Mary Poppins moment. So what was it?
When she was filming the arrival scene and dangling 60 feet in the air from a crane while Rob Marshall played the orchestral music from loud speakers, she had a moment. She said she was terrified as she was hanging there.
She had the coat, the hat, and the umbrella on. That was when she allowed herself to have that OMG moment.
EMILY BLUNT’S FAVORITE MARY POPPINS RETURNS SONG
I wondered if Emily Blunt would have a favorite song from the film. But I suppose she’s just like us and sometimes you just really connect with a song.
She loves the poignancy of the ballad Mary Poppins sings to the Banks’ children. Be sure to really listen to “The Place Where Lost Things Go” and I think you’ll feel it and be able to agree with her.
Emily Blunt explained that the song also reveals more about Mary Poppins. She comes into the lives of the children to heal.
But she also shared that she loves “The Cover Is Not The Book” too. “It’s wild and so much fun!”

Loves the cover is not the book number too. It’s wild and so much fun.

HER FAVORITE COSTUME
When you see the movie, I hope you’re blown away by the costumes. They’re INCREDIBLE.
So which one was Emily Blunt’s favorite?
She loved the red suit with the skirt that she wears while she dances with 30 amazing lamplights in “Trip a Little Light Fantastic”. She shared that it wasn’t a design that was exactly accurate for the time period but the amazing costume designer, Sandy Powell, designed tiny pleats to make it fit and then it just opened up when she twirled.
It’s pretty amazing.

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR HER?
Emily Blunt’s talent amazes me. I love hearing about new projects and wondering what she’ll put together for her audiences. But things have to be challenging sometimes, right?
Especially when it comes to taking on a role like Mary Poppins!
She shared with us that dancing was daunting. She’s never done big showstopping numbers. But she felt like she was in safe hands. She also felt like her ability level was on par with Lin Manuel-Miranda’s so, “we were in it together!”
The other big challenge?
The initial idea of actually taking on the role of Mary Poppins was also a challenge. She is such an iconic character. But then she realized that she needed to get over herself and approach it likes she does with all of her other roles. “Let the gasps be white noise.”

WAS SHE SCARED TO TAKE ON MARY POPPINS
The short answer is yes. She was scared to take Mary Poppins on but felt safety with Rob Marshall as a director. He is so loving and protective of the story.
She dove into the books by PL Travers to learn more about Mary Poppins and shared that she’s really “just a delicious character to enjoy.”
She believes her version of Mary Poppins is much closer to the character in the book. Some of the words she used to describe her include:
- rude
- vain
- funny
- enigmatic
- weird
She asked herself, “How do I find those cracks of humanity in her?” She wanted all of the sternness to drop when Mary Poppins was in the fantasy adventures — to show her own childlike wonder.
I think she did a great job finding the balance and creating a Mary Poppins that fits right into the world we know and love. I can only hope this leads to many more Mary Poppins adventures!
If you want to bring a little bit of the Mary Poppins magic home, Funko Pop has the most amazing collection for Mary Poppins Returns. I was thrilled to bring home Jack the Lamplighter although keeping him for myself might prove to be challenging! My kids are in love with him!
Carrigan has also requested Mary Poppins with the kite so I think we’ll be adding at least one more to our collection!
