How Mary Poppins Returns Came to Life on the Red Carpet

Mary Poppins Returns hits theaters on December 19th and you should definitely mark your calendars. I had the opportunity to be part of the magic at the world premiere of the film and let me tell you — it was amazing.

Huge thanks to Disney for providing me with a trip to the Mary Poppins Returns premiere in exchange for my coverage.

    MARY POPPINS RETURNS PREMIERE

Now that I’ve seen Mary Poppins Returns, I know that the magic is alive and well. She has returned and it is quite incredible! I’ll be sharing my full review soon, so watch for it.

But as with most things Disney-related, just when you think you’ve experienced all of the magic, they get you. They get you right where you feel it. Right in the gut. Or usually, right in the heart.

That’s exactly what happened when I stepped onto the red carpet at the world premiere of Mary Poppins Returns in Hollywood last week. I stepped off of Hollywood Boulevard and onto Cherry Tree Lane.

The red carpet was lined with cherry blossom trees. I felt like I had been transported into the movie itself. When you see Mary Poppins Returns you’ll know exactly which scene I’m talking about.

I felt that childlike wonder that you expect to feel with anything related to Mary Poppins.

    It was magic.

    MARY POPPINS RETURNS AFTER PARTY

The magic continued even after the movie was over. I had the opportunity to mix and mingle with the cast, crew, and other fans at the brilliantly themed after party.

    The theme?

You really do need to see the film. The final scene of the movie features a fair that it seems like the whole neighborhood is at! It’s a joyous scene and one so fitting with the message Mary Poppins Returns.

The feeling came through at the party as well. There were activities that gave us all the opportunity to take a moment to enjoy that childlike wonder that sometimes seems to be lacking.

Yes, I learned how to make a balloon animal! I actually got a few pointers from Iain Armitage (Sheldon on the show Young Sheldon) who had quickly become a master of the balloon animals.

I was tossed right back into my childhood to a time when I had learned to make them too. It was a memory I hadn’t thought of recently and it brought a smile to my face. Definitely fitting of the Mary Poppins Experience.

    MARY POPPINS RETURNS COSTUMES

One of the highlights of the evening for me was getting to see some of the amazing Mary Poppins Returns costumes up close and personal. On screen, they were jaw-dropping. To see them in person was something I can barely begin to describe.

Costume designer Sandy Powell has done something truly mesmerizing with the costumes for the movie. The costumes the characters wear when they’re in the real world just feel so perfect to me.

So reminiscent of the original that they feel like an extension from it. They add such richness to the film.

But Sandy Powell’s design really packs a punch in the fantasy world. A few of the costumes were at the party and it was hard not to just stand and start at them. So detailed and so gorgeous.

If you ever wondered just how much a costume can add to a character in a movie, these costumes prove just how much depth they can bring.

My absolute favorite costumes from the film are from the song “A Cover is Not the Book” not only because it’s one of my favorite scenes from the movie, but also because the concept is so interesting.

The costumes were hand-painted and designed to look like they fit in with the hand-drawn animation of the scene.

It was such an unexpected thing in the movie that it took me a moment to realize that the costumes weren’t just ordinary clothes.

Having the opportunity to see pieces of the film (and pieces that I believe are going to become as iconic as some of the costumes from the original film) was something I will never forget.

Leaving the theater with such a feeling of hope and magic was plenty, but to enter a party that just encouraged us all to continue to embrace that childlike wonder was truly magical. Disney magic at its finest.
