How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is in theaters TODAY! So be sure to snag some tickets for your family because you don’t want to miss the conclusion to what is one of my favorite animated film stories since becoming a parent.
ABOUT HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 3
If you’ve seen either of the previous How To Train Your Dragon movies, then you know the familiar faces of Hiccup, Astrid, and the loveable Toothless.
From DreamWorks Animation comes a surprising tale about growing up, finding the courage to face the unknown…and how nothing can ever train you to let go. What began as an unlikely friendship between an adolescent Viking and a fearsome Night Fury dragon has become an epic adventure spanning their lives. Welcome to the most astonishing chapter of one of the most beloved animated franchises in film history: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
In the new movie, we get to follow them and explore the amazing dragon utopia Hiccup has created as chief and ruler of Berk. The adventure gets serious when the sudden appearance of female Light Fury coincides with the darkest threat their village has ever faced.
Hiccup and Toothless must leave the only home they’ve known and journey to a hidden world thought only to exist in myth. As their true destinies are revealed, dragon and rider will fight together—to the very ends of the Earth—to protect everything they’ve grown to treasure.
If you think it sounds like an emotional journey, you’re right! But it’s a good one that both parents and kids can enjoy together!
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON MOVIE REVIEW
The latest film delivers exactly what I was hoping to get out of a How To Train Your Dragon movie. I want the gorgeous world of the dragons, combined with the characters I’ve grown to love, sprinkled with plenty of adventure and heart.
How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World does NOT disappoint.
The running time of the movie is 1 hour and 44 minutes which makes it a great length for kids. My kids are always pretty interested for about an hour and a half. Then it all depends on the movie.
The last 15 minutes of How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World are so engaging and packed full of emotion that kids shouldn’t have any trouble making it to the end. They’ll want to know how it all ends, especially if they’ve seen the first two films!

The visuals in this movie are exactly what you’d expect from the series. The animation is perfection and the colors are absolutely stunning. I loved the details on all of the dragons and the Vikings. The costumes and the hair blow my mind. Animation has come so far and DreamWorks really outdid themselves on this film.
I also love that the storyline maintains the themes of the first two movies by focusing on relationships, family (of all kinds), and love for one another. They’re messages I want my kids exposed to because they’re important, especially with the world we’re currently living in.
Some scenes to watch for include:
- Light Fury – she’s in a lot of scenes and I’ve fallen in love with her and enjoyed any time she was on screen. My daughter loves her even though she hasn’t seen the movie yet.
- When Toothless attempts to woo and court Light Fury – watching Toothless dance and hop around is hilarious and the kids will love it.
- Any group shots with multiple dragons – the details and colors are amazing.
- The Hidden World – I feel like I’ll need to see the movie a few more times to get the full impact of The Hidden World.
- How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is a wonderful ending to an incredible trilogy. I will miss the world of Toothless and his family! But there’s nothing better than a story of a kid and his best friend overcoming all odds together.
- Ruffnut is captured by Grimmel – she is always good for a lot of laughs and this scene is one of my favorites!
- Toothless power up – I still think it’s pretty cool to watch Toothless power up! He does it a few times in the movie so keep your eyes on him!
I mentioned needing tissues. Without giving anything away, I will tell you that the movie ends by tugging at your heartstrings. I don’t think we would want it any other way. So while you might shed some tears, you’ll also walk out of the theater with a smile on your face. I promise!

I want to pretend I didn’t get bit emotional. But it would be a lie! Saying goodbye to Toothless was harder than I thought! I remember seeing the first movie when I was pregnant with Weston and now he’s 8!
