One of my favorite things about Christmas time is that it’s a great excuse to get crafty with the kids. Whether they’re out of school for the holidays or you’re just enjoying a weekend at home, crafts are the way to go! This Christmas Elf hat is an easy craft for the kids to make. I love that it’s easy to change up depending on how creative you want to get!

CRAFT STICK CHRISTMAS ELF HAT CRAFT

Craft sticks are one of my favorite craft supplies because you can make so many different things with them. The kids also love just getting out a pile of them and getting creative. I’m pretty sure my kids could keep themselves busy with a stack of paper plates and a handful of craft sticks!

Our Craft Stick Snowflake Ornaments are a great example of how easy it is to make winter and Christmas crafts with them!

    CHRISTMAS ELF HAT MATERIALS

To make this craft you’ll need scissors, glue, and possibly some paint or a marker. You’ll also need craft sticks painted or colored green, red and green pom-poms and either patterned scrapbook paper or construction paper.

HOW TO MAKE AN ELF HAT

If you’re making this with younger kids like preschool and kindergarten, you’ll want to be sure to supervise their use of scissors. But this craft also provides great practice for fine motor skills. It’s also perfect for talking about shapes!

Triangles made out of green craft sticks

The first thing you need to do if you don’t have green craft sticks is to paint or color your sticks green. Markers work great and they don’t need the dry time that paint needs. But if your kids like to paint, it could be a fun first step!

Start by using three sticks to make a triangle and glue them together.

Then trace the inside to draw a triangle for each one on your patterned paper/construction paper. Cut each triangle out.

Next, you glue the paper on the back of the craft stick triangles. This will give the elf hats a cute design when you turn them over.

This is when you might take a break with the kids to let everything dry for a little bit. It’s easier to glue the pom-poms on the craft stick triangle when the glue is dry and holding it together well.

Once you’re ready, you’ll turn the triangle over and put on the finishing touches that turn it into a hat! Glue a row of pom-poms along the bottom of the triangle. Your kids can get creative and make patterns or choose all of one color or whatever they feel like!

Then glue on pom-pom to the top corner of the triangle and you’ll have your elf hat!

You can turn these into adorable ornaments but using string to make a loop and then gluing it to the back of the top of the hat. Making elf hat ornaments would be a fun activity to do at a classroom party or if you host any kind of Christmas event with kids at it!
