    Ingredients Needed

You only need a few ingredients to make this creamy horseradish sauce:

    • Mayonnaiseย – Mayo acts as the base for this recipe. It gives the aioli it’s creaminess. The creamier your mayo is, the creamier your aioli will be.
    • Prepared Horseradishย –ย Prepared horseradish brings a peppery punch of heat. Be sure to taste your horseradish first, as its intensity can vary.ย You may need to asjust the amount you use in your aioli to match your tastes.
    • Minced Garlicย – Garlicย enhances the aioli with its aromatic flavor and goes well with heat of the horseradish.
    • White Vinegarย – The vinegarย adds a touch of acidity to balance out the richness of the mayonnaise.
    • Saltย – A bit of salt helps all of the other flavors pop. You can also adjust the amount of salt to your taste.

Exact measurements for all of these ingredients can be found in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

    Equipment

You will also need a few items from your kitchen. Prep and clean up for this recipe is pretty easy.

    You’ll need:

    • Measuring cups
    • Measuring spoons
    • Whisk
    • Mixing bowl

Ingredients for horseradish aioli in white mixing bowl

    Recipe Instructions

This recipe makes about 10 servings and takes about 5 minutes to prepare.

    1. Mix the 1/2 cup mayonnaise with the horseradish and minced garlic in a small bowl. Add the white vinegar and salt. Then whisk together until well combined and smooth.
    2. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

    Variations/Add-Ins

If you want to tweak the flavor of this horseradish mayo a bit, you can try some of these additional ingredients:

    • Fresh Herbsย – Chopped parsley or chives can introduce a fresh flavor and add color to the aioli. You might also try just a bit of dill.
    • Spicesย – Add a dash of paprika for some smokiness or some cayenne pepper to up the heat level.
    • Lemon Juiceย – A squeeze of fresh lemon juice can lightening up the aioli with a little burst from the citrus.
    • Mustard Powder or Dijon Mustardย – Mustard can add more tang to the aioli. When adding it to horseradish, I would add just a bit at a time until get the desired flavor.

    Serving Suggestions

Horseradish aioli is more than just a condiment. It can be used as a spread but also as one of your favorite dipping sauces! It pairs with so many different foods. Here are some of our favorite ways to enjoy this aioli:

    AS A DIP

    • Potatoes are great in this sauce. Try french fries and potato wedges.
    • Onion rings
    • Sweet potato fries
    • Vegetables – this is a fun recipe to swap in place of more classic dips like ranch and bleu cheese.

    AS A SAUCE

    • Seafood – This pairs well with all kinds of seafood including crispy calamari, crab cakes, and salmon. I’ve even dipped fish sticks in it!
    • Sandwiches – Try this on your favorite sandwiches especially a roast beef sandwich! It’s also good on for added flavor on a veggie wrap.
    • Meats – Horseradish aioli is absolutely perfect with prime rib but I recommend adding this sauce onย juicy hamburgers, steak, and chicken breastย to take your meat to the next level. It adds so much flavor!

    Leftovers/Storage

Once you’ve made the aioli, refrigerate it right away to keep it fresh. Store it on a shelf away from the door to maintain a consistent temperature.

Store it in an airtight container and use it within 5-7 days.

I don’t recommend freezing leftovers as you will lose the creamy aioli texture.

    FAQs

    Is aioli just mayonnaise?

No, they’re not the same. True aioliย is made with garlic and olive oil. Mayonnaise is made with egg yolks and canola oil. Because this recipe depends on mayo as the base, it isn’t a true aioli but it does mimic the creaminess and the flavor. Plus, it’s so easy to make!

    What is horseradish made of?

Horseradish is made with the root of the horseradish plant. It’s usually made with just the horseradish root and vinegar with a bit of salt and sometimes some sugar. It’s commonly used to make things like cocktail sauce and Bloody Marys.

Can I use fresh garlic in this recipe?

You can substitute fresh garlic for the minced garlic used in this recipe. You will need one clove of garlic minced.
