Christmas is coming and we all know who the star of the show is — Santa! I like easy crafts and I have a soft spot for holiday crafts. I loved doing them in my classroom and I’ve loved making them with my kids as they’ve grown up. One of my favorite things to do was show them how to make a Santa hat with craft sticks!

HOW TO MAKE A SANTA HAT WITH CRAFT STICKS

Making this kids Santa hat is easy and it pairs perfectly with our Christmas Elf Hat that is made with popsicle sticks too. Pair them together for a fun day of crafting with your kids!

If you’re looking for a craft that sticks to pretty basic craft supplies and shouldn’t be too messy, this Santa hat craft is a good one for you to try!

    CHRISTMAS HAT CRAFT MATERIALS

For this craft, you’ll need scissors and glue. Depending on how you plan to get red craft sticks, you might also need a red marker or red paint if you want your kids to take a bit more time (and are willing to possibly have more of a mess to clean up). You can also buy craft sticks that are already colored for you.

We get our Colored Craft Sticks on Amazon.

In addition to red-colored craft sticks, you’ll need cotton balls and red construction paper or cardstock.

One quick thing to think about — if you’re crafting with younger kids, you’ll want to supervise any cutting they do with the scissors. I’d suggest you watch them with the glue too. You could always opt to use a glue gun so the craft sticks are ready for cotton balls quicker too.

HOW TO MAKE A SANTA HAT

To get started, figure out your red craft sticks. If you want to have the kids color them or paint them, I recommend you do it ahead of time so they’re dry and ready to use. Markers work great for coloring them and being able to use them right away.

Everything follows pretty easily after that. You glue the craft sticks together into a triangle. If you use white glue, there will be dry time involved before you can continue. Then you attach a triangle of red paper to the back of the sticks. After that, the kids can glue a row of cotton balls along one side of the triangle and top the “hat” with a cotton ball.

These make cute decor items or handmade homemade gifts.

You can also turn them into ornaments by attaching a loop of ribbon or string to the back behind the top cotton ball. Another cute idea is to turn them into magnets for the refrigerator by adding a magnetic strip to the back. It makes for a festive touch in the kitchen!

I also want to try writing names on the paper before we attach them to the triangle to use them for place cards at Christmas dinner! I think it would be a super cute touch!

This is also a great craft for holiday parties for the kids!
