Grilled cheese is a childhood favorite and seems so easy to make. But Iโ€™ll be honest when I make them on the stovetop in a frying pan, it feels like itโ€™s hit or miss on whether or not I donโ€™t cook it quite enough or if I let it go a little too long. The air fryer helps solve this problem!

    Why Youโ€™ll Love This Recipe

    • Quick and easy to make.ย This recipe is very simple which means anyone can make it. If youโ€™re looking to teach your kids how to use the air fryer, this is a great recipe to start with. It only takes a few minutes and is easy to put together.
    • Perfect grilled cheese.ย The air fryer will help you avoid accidently overcooking your sandwich and ending up with burnt grilled cheese.
    • Classic sandwich.ย This classic sandwich is perfect for a quick lunch or you can turn it into an easy dinner by pairing it with tomato soup. My kids also love it withย french friesย (you can make them in the air fryer too!)

    Ingredients & Equipment

The ingredient list for this recipe is super simple and you might have everything you need in your pantry and refrigerator already:

    • Butter
    • Bread
    • American cheese

The exact measurements for each recipe is in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

Youโ€™ll also need a few things from the kitchen:

    • Air fryer
    • Butter knife
    • Spatula or Tongs

How to Make Grilled Cheese in Air Fryer

This recipe makes 1 sandwich. It takes 2 minutes to prep and 6 minutes to cook. Unless you have a very large air fryer, you will probably be limited to making one grilled cheese sandwich at a time.

Step 1.ย Preheat the air fryer to 375โ„‰. If your air fryer doesnโ€™t have a preheat setting, you can set it to cook for about five minutes.

Step 2.ย Spread the butter on one side of a slice of bread. Then butter the other piece of bread.

Step 3.ย Place the cheese in the center of the bread slices, with the butter on the outside of the sandwich.

Step 4.ย Put the sandwich butter side down in the air fryer basket and cook for three minutes, then flip the sandwich and cook for an additional 3 minutes on the other side.

Step 5.ย Serve warm with your favorite soup, side dish, or salad.

    Grilled Cheese Variations

American cheese is classic but you can change things up by trying different types of cheeses. You can use pretty much any cheese that you like, but some of the ones that melt best include:

    • Sharp cheddar
    • Swiss
    • Havarti
    • Mozzarella
    • Provolone
    • Pepper jack
    • Gruyere
    • Fontina
    • Monterey jack

You can also try adding fillings to your grilled cheese:

    • Bacon
    • Sliced ham, turkey, chicken, or roast beef
    • Vegetables like tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, or onions
    • Pimento cheese
    • Dijon mustard

You can also try a different type of bread to change up the flavor using the same recipe. You can use sandwich bread or try breads like sourdough and french bread.

    Tips & Tricks

    • If you want to get an amazing cheese pull, use a combination of cheeses. Mozzarella will give you a great pull but has a mild flavor so pair it with another cheese with a stronger flavor.
    • For even better melt, used shredded cheese. I use cheese slices a lot of the time because itโ€™s what I always have in the refrigerator, but shredded cheese melts really well.
    • Try spreading a thin layer of mayonnaise and then butter on the outside of your grilled cheese for an extra crispy outside.

    Leftovers Storage & Reheating

You can put any leftover sandwiches in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. These are so easy to make that you can actually just make what you need to have them fresh.

To reheat them, use the air fryer. Heat the fryer to 375โ„‰ and then put the sandwich in the air fryer basket. Warm it for 2-3 minutes.
