What I love most about this recipe is how the kids can actually help with the shaking part, and itโ€™s one of those treats that disappears almost as fast as you can make it. Plus, you get that perfect combination of pumpkin spice, peanut butter, and white chocolate all coated in powdered sugar goodness that works beautifully as both Halloween puppy chow and Thanksgiving puppy chow for your holiday gatherings.

    Ingredients & Equipment

Hereโ€™s what youโ€™ll need to make this delicious fall puppy chow:

    • Corn Chex cereal
    • White chocolate chips
    • Peanut butter
    • Unsalted butter
    • Pumpkin puree
    • Vanilla extract
    • Pumpkin pie spice
    • Powdered sugar
    • Reeseโ€™s Pieces candy

Full measurements for each ingredient can be found in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Youโ€™ll also need a few things from your kitchen:

    • Microwave safe bowl
    • Large mixing bowl
    • Two large plastic zip bags
    • Large baking sheet
    • Measuring cups
    • Measuring spoons

    Step By Step Directions

This recipe makes 20 servings. It takes 20 minutes of prep time and 60 minutes of setting time.

Step 1. In a microwave safe bowl, melt together the white chocolate chips, peanut butter, and unsalted butter. Microwave on 20 second increments, stirring well in between.

Step 2. Add the pumpkin puree, vanilla extract, and pumpkin pie spice, and stir well.

Step 3. Add the chex cereal to a large bowl. Pour the mixture over the chex cereal, and stir to coat well.

Step 4. Add the powdered sugar to two large plastic zip bags.

Step 5. Divide the coated cereal between the bags, and shake well to coat.

Step 6. Dump the cereal onto a large baking sheet, and allow it to set for 1 hour.

Step 7. For serving, add in Reeseโ€™s pieces and enjoy.

    Variations

    • Try using chocolate Chex cereal instead of corn Chex
    • Swap Reeseโ€™s Pieces for mini chocolate chips or candy corn for different fall colors
    • Add chopped pecans or walnuts for crunch
    • Use almond butter instead of peanut butter
    • Mix in dried cranberries for tartness
    • Make it fully Halloween themed by using orange and black candies instead of Reeseโ€™s Pieces

    Leftovers & Storage

Store your fall puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. The key is making sure theyโ€™re completely set before storing so they donโ€™t get sticky. You can also divide them into smaller containers or bags for easy grab and go snacks throughout the week.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Donโ€™t skip stirring between microwave intervals or your chocolate mixture might get lumpy.
    • Make sure to coat every piece of cereal well with the chocolate mixture before adding to the bags.
    • Shake the bags really well to get an even coating of powdered sugar on everything.
    • Let the muddy buddies set for a full hour so the coating hardens properly and doesnโ€™t get sticky.
    • Add the Reeseโ€™s Pieces right before serving.
    • If you donโ€™t have two large bags, you can do this in batches with smaller bags.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I make this without peanut butter?

Yes! You can substitute with almond butter, sunflower seed butter, or just use extra butter and increase the white chocolate chips slightly for richness.

What if I donโ€™t have pumpkin pie spice?

You can make your own by mixing together cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and a pinch of cloves, or just use cinnamon for a simpler version.

Can I use milk chocolate instead of white chocolate?

Absolutely! Milk chocolate or even semi sweet chocolate chips work great, though the flavor will be a bit different from the classic white chocolate base.

How do I know when the mixture is properly melted? It should be smooth and completely combined with no lumps of chocolate or peanut butter. If it looks grainy, keep microwaving in 10 second intervals.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes! Puppy chow keeps really well for several days and is perfect for making ahead for parties or gatherings. Itโ€™s great for holiday parties!

What if my coating looks clumpy?

Make sure your chocolate mixture has cooled slightly before coating the cereal and donโ€™t be afraid to break up any clumps with your hands before adding the Reeseโ€™s pieces.
