If you want cake but donโ€™t want to make a whole cake, microwave mug cakes are great recipes to have. Theyโ€™re easy to make you probably have all of the ingredients you need in your pantry already. Itโ€™s a basic cake recipe where you mix the dry ingredients together and then add the wet ingredients, itโ€™s just in a single serving!

    Why Youโ€™ll Love This Recipe

    • Ready in Minutes: This recipe takes less than 5 minutes from start to finish which makes it perfect for busy days or late-night sweet cravings.
    • Minimal Ingredients: Youโ€™ll only need a few pantry staples and Nutella to make this mug cake. There are no complicated ingredients.
    • Perfect for Any Time: Whether itโ€™s a quick dessert after dinner, a treat for one on a cozy evening ay home, or an indulgence for a sudden chocolate craving, this mug cake works! Mug cakes are great for kids to make on their own too as long as theyโ€™re old enough to use the microwave.

    Ingredients & Equipment

As I mentioned, the ingredients for this mug cake are pantry staples. Hereโ€™s what you need:

    • Flour
    • Unsweetened cocoa powder
    • Sugar
    • Baking powder
    • Salt
    • Milk
    • Vegetable oil
    • Nutella (or another chocolate hazelnut spread)
    • Vanilla extract

Exact measurements for each ingredient can be found in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

Youโ€™ll also want to get anything you might want to use as additional toppings like whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, strawberries or other berries, chocolate chips, etc.

Youโ€™ll also need a few things from the kitchen, including:

    • Microwave-safe mug (Note: Make sure to use a large mug because the cake more than doubles in size as it bakes.)
    • Measuring spoons
    • Whisk
    • Spoon to stir cake batter

    Variations

You can use this recipe as a great base and change up the flavor with a few tweaks.

    • Mash half of a ripe banana and add to the batter for a Banana Nutella cake.
    • You can also add frozen or fresh berries like raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries to the batter. They pair so well with chocolate and hazelnut.
    • Sprinkle chopped hazelnuts on top or mix them in for extra crunch.
    • Break some pretzels up and sprinkle them on top for a salty-sweet combination.
    • Sprinkle shredded coconut into the batter or on top before microwaving for an Almond Joy vibe.
    • You can add or top with mini chocolate chips to amp up the chocolate flavor.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Make sure to use a large mug because the cake more than doubles in size as it bakes.
    • For this mug cake recipe, I recommend putting a plate or another microwave-safe dish underneath the mug because this cake can expland so much.
    • You can also make mug cake in different containers as long as theyโ€™re microwave-safe. You can use ramekins and jars. You can even use paper cups.
    • Donโ€™t overmix the cake batter or it might not rise as well when you cook it. Just mix the dry ingredients until theyโ€™re combined.

    FAQs

Whatโ€™s the best way to prevent the cake from being too dry?

Microwaving too long is the most common reason your mug cake might be dry. You can always start with 60 seconds and then microwave in additional 15-second intervals if youโ€™re having issues with dry cake. Different microwave ovens cook differently so cooking time may be slightly different.

Why did my cake overflow in the microwave?

The mug might have been too small or it was filled too close to the top. This recipe can double in size as it cooks so use a large mug. You can also make it in a bowl.

How can I make the texture fudgier?

If you want a cake that is more fudgy, reduce the cook time slightly and add an extra tablespoon of Nutella to the batter. Using a shorter cooking time keeps the cake more gooey. This recipe has no eggs so youโ€™re safe to eat the slightly underbaked cake.
