As Iโ€™ve gotten older, Iโ€™ve fallen in love with a lot of things I didnโ€™t like when I was younger. For me, itโ€™s things like swiss cheese, goat cheese, and blue cheese! Learning to make Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing has been an easy and delicious addition to my kitchen!

This recipe will make a dressing that is creamy and tangy. Itโ€™s perfect for salads, dipping veggies, buffalo wings, and steak!

At first, I thought making blue cheese dressing would be too difficult so I never even tried. But Iโ€™ve gotten a little braver over the years and discovered itโ€™s really pretty simple.

    Why Youโ€™ll Love this Recipe

    • Itโ€™s so fresh! When you make blue cheese dressing at home, youโ€™re using fresh ingredients. This means the flavors really pop in a way that store bought dressing canโ€™t quite hit.
    • Customize it to your taste! This is another thing I really love about this recipe. You can make it as strong or mild as you like. You can also control how chunk it is, so you can a texture and flavor that you love.
    • Such a versatile recipe. I love this recipe because blue cheese dressing is great on salads, of course. But itโ€™s also one of the best dips out there. So you can make a batch and use it for all sorts of things!

Once you learn how to make this recipe, I think youโ€™ll love making it again and again because it is so easy to customize.

Jar of Buttermilk Blue Cheese dressing

    Blue Cheese Dressing Ingredients

This ingredient list isnโ€™t the shortest, but the ingredients are all very basic and you probably have a lot of them in your kitchen already.

Full measurements can be found in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

    Hereโ€™s what youโ€™ll need:

    • Buttermilk Blue Cheese
    • Mayonnaise
    • Sour Cream
    • Buttermilk
    • Crushed peppercorn (You can also use regular black pepper.)
    • Garlic powder
    • Worcestershire sauce
    • Salt
    • Fresh parsley, if desired

Youโ€™ll also need a few pieces of kitchen equipment to make this recipe:

    • Small mixing bowl
    • Hand mixer
    • Measuring cups
    • Serving dish of your choice (I recommend a Mason jar or glass container because it looks great!)

    Easy Blue Cheese Dressing Steps

    1. Crumble the blue cheese and place in a small bowl.

    2. In a medium bowl, mix together buttermilk, 3oz of blue cheese crumbles, peppercorn, garlic powder, salt, and Worcestershire sauce using a hand mixer.

    3. Then stir in 1/2 cup sour cream and 1/2 cup mayonnaise.

    4. Pour into a 12 ounce serving dish and top of with a little more crushed peppercorn, the remaining blue cheese crumbles, and parsley (if desired).

    5. Enjoy on your favorite salad or as a delicious dip!

    Substitutions & Variations

There are a variety of ways to change things up with this recipe.

    1. Adjust Creaminess: Control the thickness by adjusting the amount of buttermilk or sour cream.
    2. Flavor Enhancements: Add herbs like chives or parsley for an extra flavor kick.
    3. Sweet or Tangy: Add a touch of honey or apple cider vinegar to balance flavors.
    4. Easy Swap: Swap out plain greek yogurt for the mayo and get a protein boost!

    Serving Suggestions

You can obviously use this dressing on your favorite salad. I love swapping it when I would use ranch dressing for extra flavor.

    Salad Ideas

    • Wedge Salad: Cut a crisp iceberg wedgeand top it with blue cheese dressing, crispy bacon bits, cherry tomatoes, and red onion slices for a simple yet flavorful dish.
    • Buffalo Chicken Salad: Put spicy buffalo chicken strips on a bed of romaine lettuce, with celery, carrots, and then add a generous drizzle of blue cheese dressing.
    • Spinach and Pear Salad: Mix fresh spinach leaves with sliced pears, candied pecans, and a sprinkle of crumbled blue cheese. Then top with the blue cheese dressing.

Itโ€™s great with classic chicken wings, carrots, and celery too!

    Dip & Spread Ideas

Try it as a dip with some of our favorite recipes:

    • Buffalo Panko Chicken Strips
    • Crispy Baked Green Beans
    • Air Fryer Carrot Fries
    • Air Fryer Chicken Wings

Try it as a sandwich spread too:

    • Sandwiches: Spread blue cheese dressing on your favorite deli sandwich. I love it on roast beef!
    • Burgers: You can also top your burgers with a layer of blue cheese dressing instead of the usual condiments.

Or drizzle it on your favorite foods:

    • Roasted Vegetables: Drizzle blue cheese dressing over roasted vegetables like Brussels sprouts, potatoes, or broccoli. Itโ€™s delicious!
    • Pizza: After baking, drizzle a bit of blue cheese dressing over your pizza to add some extra flavor.

    Leftovers/Storage

Homemade blue cheese dressing doesnโ€™t last as long as store-bought salad dressing because it doesnโ€™t have any preservatives. It will last for about a week in the refrigerator.

Store any leftover blue cheese dressing in an airtight container in a cold part of your refrigerator (I donโ€™t recommend putting it in the door of the fridge).

If the dressing starts to smell sour or separates, then you know that itโ€™s not good anymore.

About 5 days in the refrigerator. I wouldn’t keep it more than 7 days.

I love this dressing but I’ve found after one day in the fridge, it thins out almost to a mild consistency…..I end up throwing it out. I do use lower fat sour cream and wonder if that is causing it….

How much buttermilk and how much blue cheese? The recipe seems to combine the two…

Delicious. I make it for my Friend and he thinks this is an elaborate recipe. He even brought the jar to a diner and a fellow diner inquired about it. She thought it was the best dressing she had ever eaten after he graciously offered a taste
