    Step By Step Directions

This recipe makes 12 Rice Krispies treats. It takes 20 minutes of prep time and decorating time. Then they need about an hour to cool completely.

Step 1.ย  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use non-stick cooking spray to grease it.

Back pot with melted butter and marshmallows

Step 2. In a large saucepan or pot, melt the butter over low heat. You want to use low heat so the butter does not burn.

Step 3. Once the butter is completely melted, add the mini marshmallows, stirring until completely melted and the mixture is smooth.

Step 4.ย Remove the pot from the heat and gently stir in the Rice Krispies cereal until it is all well coated with the marshmallow mixture.

Step 5.ย Press the cereal mixture into the baking sheet in an even layer. Use a silicone spatula sprayed with non-stick cooking spray or buttered to smooth it out. (Greasing the spatula will prevent it from sticking to the cereal mixture.)

    Leftovers & Storage

You can store leftover 4th of July rice crispy treats in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 to 3 days.

If you put a peach of parchment paper or wax paper between the layers, it will help keep them from sticking together. You want to store them at room temperature and not in the refrigerator.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Easy clean up: Using parchment paper to line your baking sheet makes clean up easier.
    • Be quick: Be sure to add the sprinkles before the candy melts set so they will stick.
    • Fully coated: You can also dip the tops of the Rice Krispies treats into the melted candy melts to coat the entire top for a different look. This works well using white as a base and then decorating with red and blue. You can also do a white base and then use patriotic sprinkles.
    • Cute shapes: You can also use cookie cutters to cut out cute shaped treats. Star cookie cutters work great with Red White and Blue Rice Krispie Treats. If you do use a cookie cutter, you want to let the treats cool and set before cutting them.
    • Celebrate any holiday: This recipe also works great for other holidays. Candy melts come in tons of different colors. Try red, green, and white for Christmas or red, pink and white for Valentineโ€™s Day. Orange, black, purple and lime green are fun for Halloween. Fall colors also work great for the month of October and Thanksgiving.
