What I love most about this recipe is how interactive it is for the whole family. The kids can help shape the ghosts while you handle the melting chocolate, and each treat can be a slightly different size and personality. Theyโ€™re perfect for Halloween parties, school treats, or just a fun weekend project that gets everyone excited for the spookiest season.

Ghost treats made with Rice Krispies treats on an orange serving dish

    Ingredients & Equipment

    • Mini marshmallows
    • Butter
    • Crispy rice cereal
    • White melting chocolate
    • Chocolate chips

Full measurements for each ingredient can be found in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Youโ€™ll also need a few things from your kitchen:

    • Large microwave safe bowl
    • Parchment paper
    • Nonstick cooking spray
    • Piping bag

    Step By Step Directions

This recipe makes 24 servings. It takes 30 minutes of prep time and 0 minutes of cook time.

Step 1. Combine the mini marshmallows and butter in a large microwave safe bowl. Heat in 30 second increments until the butter is melted. Stir to mix.

Step 2. Add the cereal and carefully stir until all the ingredients come together. Allow the mixture to cool for around 10 minutes.

Step 3. Use nonstick cooking spray to grease your hands, then scoop out a small amount of the cereal mixture. Squeeze the mixture between your hands until it sticks together, then form it into an egg shape with a flat bottom. Repeat the process until all the cereal mixture has been used, varying the size of each ghost.

Step 4. Place the cereal balls on a piece of parchment paper to harden. Allow the treats to rest for at least 30 minutes, until fully cool.

Step 5. Melt the white chocolate according to the package instructions and dip the top of each treat in the melted chocolate.

Step 6. Return the treats to the parchment paper and allow the white chocolate to fully harden, around 30 minutes.

Step 7. Melt the chocolate chips in 30 second increments until melted, then transfer it to a piping bag. Cut the tip off the bag and pipe two eyes and a mouth on the front of each ghost. Allow the chocolate to harden before serving.

    Variations

    • Use orange melting chocolate instead of white for pumpkin-shaped treats.
    • Add a few drops of vanilla extract to the marshmallow mixture for extra flavor.
    • Roll some treats in coconut flakes before dipping for a textured ghost effect.
    • Make mini ghosts using a smaller scoop for bite-sized treats perfect for little hands.
    • Create different expressions by varying the chocolate chip placement for happy, surprised, or silly faces.
    • Dip the bottom half in dark chocolate for a two-toned ghost effect.

    Leftovers & Storage

Store your Ghost Halloween Rice Krispies Treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. The treats actually get a bit chewier after the first day, which many people prefer. You can also make these a day ahead of your Halloween party since they hold their shape perfectly.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Spray your hands generously with cooking spray to prevent sticking when shaping the ghosts.
    • Let the cereal mixture cool completely before shaping to avoid burns and ensure the treats hold together.
    • Work quickly when dipping in white chocolate as it hardens fast.
    • If your white chocolate gets too thick, add a small amount of coconut oil to thin it out.
    • Make sure the white chocolate is completely set before adding the chocolate chip faces to prevent smudging.
    • Use a toothpick to create different face expressions if you donโ€™t have a piping bag.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I use regular marshmallows instead of mini marshmallows?

Yes, but youโ€™ll need to cut them into smaller pieces first or they wonโ€™t melt as evenly in the microwave.

What if I donโ€™t have white melting chocolate?

You can use white chocolate chips, but add a teaspoon of coconut oil when melting to help with dipping consistency.

How far ahead can I make these treats?

You can make these up to three days ahead and store them in an airtight container. The texture stays perfect for several days.

Can kids help make these treats?

Absolutely! Kids love shaping the ghosts and can help with the chocolate chip faces. Just make sure adults handle all the melting steps.

Whatโ€™s the best way to get even ghost shapes?

Donโ€™t worry about perfection! The slightly irregular shapes make each ghost more charming and unique.

    Can I freeze these treats?

Yes, these freeze well for up to one month. Just make sure theyโ€™re completely set before freezing and thaw at room temperature.
