Recipe FAQs
Can I use regular lime juice instead of key lime juice?
Yes, you can use regular lime juice if you canโt find key limes. Just keep in mind the flavor will be a bit different, but still delicious!
How far in advance can I make this Keylime Pie recipe?
You can make it a day ahead. I actually think it tastes even better after chilling in the fridge overnight.
Do I need to bake the graham cracker crust?
Thereโs no baking needed! The melted butter helps the crust stay together once it chills.
Can I use homemade whipped cream instead of whipped topping?
Fresh whipped cream works well, just whip it until stiff peaks form. The texture may be slightly different than if you use Cool Whip but it will still be tasty!
How long does the pie need to chill before serving?
Itโs best to let it chill for at least 4 hours, but overnight is perfect if you have time.
Can I freeze this pie?
Yes, you can freeze it for up to a month. Let it thaw in the fridge before serving.
Should I use fresh or bottled key lime juice?
Fresh key lime juice has the best flavor, but bottled works fine and can save you a bit of time too.
What toppings go well with this pie?
You can add extra whipped topping, lime slices and lime zest (like I did), or a sprinkle of graham cracker crumbs on top. Raspberries also pair well with key lime so you can use them as a topping too.
How do I store leftovers?
Cover the pie and keep it in the fridge for up to three days.
Can kids help make this recipe?
Itโs perfect for making with the kids because itโs simple and fun to make. Plus, thereโs no baking or sharp tools involved.

Step By Step Directions
This recipe makes 6 or 12 servings depending on how you slice it. It takes about 15 minutes to prepare and then needs at least 4 hours of chill and set time before serving.
Step 1. Melt the butter and crush the graham crackers into crumbs.
Step 2. In a medium bowl, mix together the graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and melted butter.
Step 3. Press the graham cracker mixture into the bottom of a pie plate, pressing up the sides of the dish to create a crust. Allow to cool.

Step 4. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and key lime juice until the mixture is smooth.
Step 5. Gently fold in the whipped topping.

Step 6. Pour the mixture into the pie crust and smooth it to the edges.
Step 7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the pie to fully set.

Step 8. Before serving, cut thin slices of lime, then cut into quarters for garnish. Youโll need 12 quarters. Zest another lime.
Step 9. Add about 1 cup of whipped topping to a piping bag equipped with a star tip, and pipe out one star on the edge, then another directly across from it, then one halfway between those, and another on the opposite edge. Now pipe two stars in between each of those. You will have 12 stars.

Step 10. Add a quarter lime slice to the center of each star.
Step 11. For extra color, dust the pie with lime zest for an added pop of color.
Step 12. To serve cut into 6 regular or 12 small slices.

Leftovers & Storage
Cover leftovers with plastic wrap or foil and keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. If the plastic wrap is trying to stick to the top of the pie, you can put a few toothpicks in the dessert to hold the wrap up off of the top of it.
