Why We Love Red White and Blue Popcorn

    • Red White and Blue popcorn is super easy to make. Itโ€™s a great recipe to make with the kids in the kitchen. With just a bit of adult supervision for heating things, itโ€™s a fun snack mix to whip up together.
    • You can tweak the patriotic popcorn recipe for any holiday or special occasion by using different colors and sprinkles that work for your plans. Try red, green and white for Christmas, blue and white for winter, red and pink for Valentineโ€™s Day, or green and white for St. Patrickโ€™s Day. Orange, black, purple, and lime green are great for Halloween.
    • The ingredients list is super simple and should be very easy for you to find!

    Ingredients

You should be able to find all of the ingredients to make this popcorn mixed with candy at your local grocery store.ย  If you canโ€™t find candy melts at the grocery store, you can find them at Michaels or online. Hereโ€™s what you need to get to make these:

    • Popcorn kernels or microwave popcorn
    • Red candy melts
    • White candy melts
    • Blue candy melts
    • M&Ms (Red, White, and Red)
    • Patriotic sprinkles

The exact measurements for each ingredient can be found in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

    Equipment

Youโ€™ll also need a few things from your kitchen to make the popcorn:

    • Air popper (or use microwave popcorn)
    • Parchment paper
    • Microwave-safe bowl
    • Spoon
    • Piping bags

*You can use spoons, piping bags, or zipper top sandwich bags to drizzle the melted candy melts on the popcorn.

Ingredients to make red white and blue popcorn

    Step By Step Directions

This recipe makes 6-8 cups of 4th of July candy popcorn. It takes 10 minutes of prep time and about 20 minutes of cooling time for the candy melts.

Step 1.ย  Lay a sheet of parchment paper out on the counter.

Step 2. Pop the popcorn. Either use an air popper to pop the 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels according to the manufacturerโ€™s instructions. You can also pop two bags of microwave popcorn according to the directions on the package.

Bowl of popcorn, three bowls with red white and blue candy melts melted, and pocorn spread on parchment paper

Step 3. Spread the popcorn out on the parchment paper.

Step 4. Put the red candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Use the 50% power or on the defrost setting on the microwave and microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between each one. You want the candy melts to be completely melted and smooth. Repeat for the blue and white candy melts.

Step 5. Use a spoon, piping bag, or sandwich bag with the corner cut off to drizzle the red white and blue melted candy over the popcorn.

Step 6. While the melted candy is still wet, sprinkle the popcorn with M&Ms and sprinkles.

Step 7. Letย the candy melts to harden at room temperature, which should take about 15-20 minutes.

Step 8.ย Once the melted candy has cooled and set, break the popcorn into clusters. You can serve in a large bowl or put it in individual bags for parties.

    Leftovers & Storage

You can store leftover Fourth of July popcorn in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Easy clean up: Using parchment paper makes clean up so simple. You can also lay the popcorn out on a baking sheet or cutting board, but with parchment paper you can just toss it when youโ€™re done.
    • Be quick: Be sure to add the sprinkles and M&Ms before the candy melts set so they will stick to the popcorn.
    • If you canโ€™t find red white and blue M&Ms, you can pick red and blue M&Ms out of a package of regular colors.
    • Canโ€™t find candy melts? If you canโ€™t find candy melts, you can also use vanilla almond bark or white chocolate chips to coat the popcorn. Then get your red and blue colors using sprinkles and candy.
