Why We Love Red White and Blue Jello Shots

    • The ingredients list is super simple and you should have no trouble finding everything you need to make 4th of July Jello shots.
    • Once you learn how to make layered Jello shots, you can use different color combinations to make them for any occasion. You can try red, white and pink for Valentines day or red, green, and white for Christmas! For Halloween I I have done orange and white and also some orange, white, green or purple.
    • You can make these with or without alcohol. This recipe is for non-alcoholic Jello shots that all ages can enjoy. If you want to learn how to make boozy Jello shots, Iโ€™ve included additional directions near the bottom of the post.

    Ingredients

You should be able to find all of the ingredients to make Fourth of July Jello shots your local grocery store. Hereโ€™s what you need:

    • Blue Jello mix (berry blue flavor)
    • Unflavored gelatin mix
    • Sweetened condensed milk
    • Red Jello mix (cherry, strawberry, raspberry, watermelon, or strawberry banana)
    • Water
    • Whipped cream
    • Red white and blue sprinkles

The exact measurements for each ingredient can be found in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.

    Equipment

Youโ€™ll also need a few things from your kitchen to make these red white and blue Jello shots:

    • 1 oz shot glasses
    • Liquid measuring cup
    • Medium pot
    • Spoon
    • Large liquid measuring cup (optional, but can help you pour the Jello into the shot glasses)

Ingredients to make red white and blue Jello shots on marble counter top

    Step By Step Directions

This recipe can make around 40-50 1 ounce Jello shots. Youโ€™ll need about 30 minutes of prep time split between the three Jello layers. Youโ€™ll need 90 minutes to 2 hours hours for each layer to set up for a total of 4.5-6 hours total. This is definitely a mke ahead of time recipe.

    BLUE LAYER

Step 1.ย  Dissolve the blue Jello mix in 1 cup of boiling water.

Step 2. Mix in 1 cup of cold water.

Step 3. Pour the Jello into the shot glasses, filling each one up about โ…“ of the way. Place in the refrigerator to set. This usually takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours.

An easy way to pour the Jello into the shot glasses is to put it in a large liquid measuring cup with a spout or in a baking bowl with a spout. Then itโ€™s easier to pour.

    WHITE LAYER

Step 1.ย Sprinkle 2 packets of unflavored gelatin over ยฝ cup of cold water. Let it sit for a few minutes to โ€œbloomโ€ (or soften). This could take 5-10 minutes. Itโ€™s an important step because it will help you make sure your gelatin isnโ€™t clumpy.

Step 2. Add 1 cup boiling water and stir until the gelatin is completely dissolved.

Step 3. Stir in the sweetened condensed milk until well mixed. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature.

Step 4. Gently pour the white gelatin mixture over the set blue layer it to fill the glasses another third of the way up. Return to the refrigerator and let set for another 90 minutes to 2 hours.

    RED LAYER

Step 1.ย  Dissolve the red Jello mix in 1 cup of boiling water.

Step 2. Mix in 1 cup of cold water.

Step 3. Pour the Jello into the shot glasses, filling each one the rest of the way up the glass. Place in the refrigerator to set. This usually takes about 90 minutes to 2 hours.

    GARNISH & SERVE

Step 1. Once set up, top each Jello shot with a small dollop of whipped cream.

Step 2. Sprinkle with sprinkles and enjoy!

    Leftovers & Storage

You can store leftover red white and blue Jello shots in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Be sure to cover them with plastic wrap or lids (if your shot glasses come with them).

    Variations

There is another way to make the white layer that might feel a bit easier. If you want to skip mixing the plain gelatin and sweetened condensed milk, you can use Cool Whip whipped topping instead.

After the blue layer sets, you can use a spoon or a piping bag to make a white layer that takes up about 1/3 of the cup. You want to make sure that the cool whip touches all sides of the shot glass so the next layer of Jello wonโ€™t leak through.

Then put the shot glasses in the refrigerator while you prep the red Jello for the final layer.

If youโ€™re using a Cool Whip layer, be sure to let the red Jello cool down otherwise it will melt the Cool Whip layer and youโ€™ll get bits of whipped topping at the top of your red layer. You can let it sit for about 30 minutes at room temperature.

    HOW TO MAKE BOOZY SHOTS

If you want to add alcohol to these 4th of July Jello shots, itโ€™s pretty simple. In addition to the ingredients listed in this recipe, youโ€™ll need 1 cup of vodka.

Youโ€™ll follow the same step by step instructions, but when you make the blue and red Jello layers, instead of 1 cup of cold water, you will mix in ยฝ cup vodka and ยฝ cup cold water.

All of the other steps remain the same whether youโ€™re using alcohol or not.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Chill each layer completely: Let each layer set fully before adding the next to keep colors sharp and layers even. This is one of the most important steps for the best looking red white and blue jello shooters!
    • Donโ€™t overmix the Jello/gelatin: Stir until dissolved, but avoid whipping extra bubbles into the mix for clearer layers.
    • Clean the edges: If any Jello runs down the side, wipe the inside of the cup before it sets for clean layers.
    • Chill overnight if possible: Longer chilling will help make sure everything is set and easier to remove from the cups.
    • Garnish right before serving: Top with whipped cream and sprinkles right before serving so the toppings donโ€™t melt. You can also top with maraschino cherries for an extra pop of color!
